On Tuesday, April 9, the Home Builders Association of Lincoln (HBAL), honored the young people who have excelled in programs we sponsor. HBAL takes very seriously its dedication to youth and to housing and we feel we have some outstanding programs which foster an interest in and love for homebuilding.

Our High School Interior Design and CAD Residential Design Contest recently completed its 52nd year. These student entries were judged and displayed at the Nebraska Builders Home and Garden Show. Pam Magner introduced the winners and recognized the staff in attendance from Lincoln Public Schools.

  • Stan Haas, Assistant Curriculum Specialist: Skilled & Technical Sciences
  • Kristin Vest, Assistant Curriculum Specialist: Family & Consumer Sciences
  • Mary Stauffer, Lincoln Southeast High School
  • Jon Heithold, Brittany Wach and Alyssa Day, Lincoln East High School

Residential Design Contest Winners:

  • Ian Tinsley, Lincoln East High School, placed third and receives $100.
  • Lucy Barrett, Lincoln East High School placed second and receives $150.
  • Jenna Johnson, Lincoln East, placed first and receives $200.

Judges for this contest were Dan Loeck (Loeck Designs), Greg Smith, Dayna Hoch and Aubrey Wassung (Davis Design) and Marlene Stroup (Schwinn Homes).

  • Kearah Perreault, Lincoln High School placed third and receives $100.
  • Apple Sullivan, Lincoln East High School placed second and receives $150.
  • Kenna Morgan, Lincoln East High School placed first and receives $200.

Judges for this contest were Pam Magner (Reynolds Design and Remodeling), Megan Dreyer (CS Kitchen and Bath Studio) and Heidi Polacek (Lincoln Cabinet).

The Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation awards scholarships each year to high school seniors who are entering college to pursue a degree related to construction. We also award $4,500 in scholarships to students already enrolled at SCC-Milford in construction programs. Beau Daffer recognized those SCC Milford students in attendance prior to presenting this year’s scholarships from the Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation.

The following recipients each receive a $1,000 HBAL/ Remodelers Council Scholarship.

Ian Tinsley – Ian attends Lincoln East High School and plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln majoring in Construction Management. Ian hopes to find a job as a project engineer or project manager at a construction firm. He is active in FBLA and Cross Country, has worked for Schneider Custom Homes, has his own lawn care business and volunteers for YFC Lincoln.

Burke Settles Burke attends Raymond Central high school and plans to attend Southeast Community College majoring in electrical technology. After graduating Burke hopes to become a journeyman electrician. Burke is active with Raymond Central FFA, 4-H, Leggett’s YGB Livestock Camp, Raymond Central Youth Trap and has several jobs.

 Cameron BeckerCameron attends Pius the tenth high school and plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and become a civil engineer. Cameron is active with Pius basketball, is a volunteer coach for YMCA basketball and works for Judson Irrigation.

Jacob Williams Jacob attends Wilber-Clatonia High School and plans to attend Northeast Community College majoring in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. After graduation he hopes to work for an HVAC contractor. Jacob is active with High school track and field, FFA, FBLA and Student Council.

Philip KarpovPhilip attends Raymond Central High School and plans to attend Southeast Community College majoring in Building Construction Technology. After graduation, he hopes to own his own construction business. Philip is active in FBLA, FCA, quizbowl, football and wrestling. He has worked for Premium Woods and Professional Painting.

The $1,500 President’s scholarship is awarded to a student who has a parent or relative who is a member or employed by a member of Home Builders. This year’s winner is Logan Magnussen son of Erin Magnussen with Reese Construction and Shawn Magnussen.

Logan attends Lincoln East High School and will be joining the Lincoln Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Center to become an electrician. Logan hopes to complete his journeyman’s license in the next 5 years. Logan is active with several jobs. He is interested in pursuing a career in construction because he knows there aren’t enough electricians to do the available work. Logan credits his mom for influencing his decision to join the construction industry. His mom has worked in the construction industry since before graduating from high school. He said she loves her work and always told him if you love what you do, it’s not working.
